Why are new cars so hard to work on?

Back in the 50s-80’s cars were actually built correctly (I own a 76 Nova). Why then do new cars only last 100k miles without replacing every part practically, have front wheel drive and are impossible to work on?

I am having a baby in October and would like to sell my 1994 mercury cougar and with that money and my saved money would like to lease a car. So I dont have to worry about the car breaking down etc.
