We all want to get the most out of every tank of gas we buy. If this wasnt the case why are there so many tricks that try and squeeze the most out of every drop of gas? For example, there is a theory that if one drives with the air conditioner off, the vehicle will use less gas and therefore be more efficient. Though this is true, it definitely isnt worth sweating all the way to work.

This is another theory that says if you ride behind a semi-truck on the freeway,(aka drafting) it removes most of the air resistance and therefore improves gas mileage. This also is true, the problem is that it is illegal to be were the driver of the truck cant see you. In order for the drive of the truck see you, you need to move further back and therefore taking away the wind resistance. In addition, driving that close to an 18 wheeler will do damage to your car from the flying rocks.

Some people think by putting moth balls in their gas tank it will increase the levels of octane in the gas. Whether this trick is true or not, a good rule of thumb is to never put things in a gas tank that are not intended to be there. But at the end of the day, the way to improve mpg and learn how an engine works and purchase parts that improves that process.

Basically all combustible engines work the same way. Air is brought into the engine through the air intake and then mixed with gasoline in the engine. An explosion happens, and then the exhaust gases will be pushed out of the engine to the exhaust system (e.g. exhaust pipes, headers, and muffler). The main idea behind a combustible engine is air in and then air out. If the engine can does this function more efficiently then improved MPG will be noticed. The principle idea is pretty simply.

The two best ways to improve this process is with a cold air intake system with a free flowing air filter and a new high performance exhaust. A cold air intake increases the amount of air that is pulled into the motor as well as decreases the resistance the air has to travel through. The free flowing air filter stills filters the air going into the engine yet does it in a much more efficient manner. A high performance exhaust system will allow the exhaust gases to escape the engine much quicker through larger pipes and free flowing muffler. These two changes to a vehicle can improve power and gas mileage as much as 30%.
