Automation Wizard asked:

I might purchase a vehicle that was originally sold in New York. Would it have the necessary equipment to pass California emissions standards?

The vehicles I’m looking at are BMW’s made after 2001.

No, California is the toughest state in the union for smog laws.

But, I brought my car in from out of state and got an out of state exemption.

    Ta Da ! ! !

You don’t actually need special equipment on the car– I bought a Saturn in MD, moved to CA and the car passed smog. I think the trick is that CA simply has stricter air quality standards than most states–I’d expect that a relatively new BMW should be able to pass without difficulty, but you might want to check with the CA DMV.

some do and some don’t, the car needs to meet all 50 state and federal emissions, you can find this info on the car, worse case check with the CA DMV first

You will have to pay a fee to bring the car in the state
