Tips for used car shopping? Any new cheap new cars that are really better and reliable?

starryeyed asked:

Please help. I have moved to a rural area, and have not found a good job yet. My car is dead, my bankruptcy is just about to be cleared, and I’m working as a sub teacher for not enough money, but some.
The cars around here are 8K to start, and that’s for 70K miles, etc. I have a very wonderful BF who might take the loan for me and ask me to pay of course… I can’t seem to think logically due to guilt and the tremendous recent loss of independence.
Can anyone give me the straight on this? PS by rural I mean northern, mountainous, snowy, but not necessarily SUV-only territory.
Thanks a bunch!

My only advice to you would be to do your homework prior to purchasing.

there are some good places online that can educate you on reliable vehicles of a new and used nature.

    I would start looking at:

and even Consumer Reports with actual user-reviews of particular vehicles and such.

This is very important and you only have 1 shot at it.

on line check at kbb.com and edmonds.com Also go to your local library and read the latest results in consumer reports. they break cars down into price ranges and tell you which are not recommended as well as those that are recommended. Good luck.

    This too will pass..
Well since you will be faced with snow, winding roads, and probobley going on shopping trips to the city you need the room. Either a subaru all wheel drive a forester is a good bet. Now a good front wheel drive is a good bet also you may have to put chains on from time to time but not as mush as a rear wheel drive car so i suggest an older Toyota Not a Nissan. If a toyota has had even minimul maintenance it would still run for 250000 if it has been well taken care of it can go for 500000. Look in autotrader.com plug in your stuff and there they are. For about 8000 you could find a very nice low mile toyota. You would porbobley be safe to put a 100 mile radius on your search and go down to the city and buy one there. Honda is a great auto also. Any car you buy get it in the city not your area more then likley in yur area they have ran the bejesus out of it find a person that just drives to work.. dont get impatient and snop up the first thing that comes along get 4 or 5 cars to look at in the city and take a saturday and go look leave a deposit and get it or give em cash offer 7000 and see what happens good luck

Consider a Jeep Cherokee (the boxie one, not the grand Cherokee). They are cheap, reliable (I have one and my mom has one and neither of us have had problems *knock on wood*). They should fit the bill in your area and terrain. You might also consider a Chevy Cavalier that is a few years old.

Any new car is going to be at least 14K after taxes and such. If you buy a used car, especially one in the 7K range, you wont lose much if you sell the car in a few years and get a new car.
