It depends on what state. Some states, for example, give the new owner a temporary license plate that will be valid for a 30-day period until the vehicle’s permanent plates arrive. Often this will go in the back window or right on the license plate holder.
Others, however, actually make you attach a copy of the registration to the front window to prove ownership until the final paperwork has been submitted and the license plate has arrived.
Another possibility is the vehicle’s registration sticker. Many states require that all vehicle’s are registered (although brand new are usually excluded), and will require this sticker to be placed on the front left or sometimes middle of the windshield at the bottom.

temporary tags good until you receive your permanent tag. Any legal dealership is not letting you drive off the lot without insurance and tags,

It is a temporary tag, issued by the dealer to give the customer or the dealer a certain amount of time to get the car titled and registered with regular plates. Depending on the state, some owners do their own motor vehicle, others the dealership does it for them. Also depending on the state depends on how long they are good for, 20 to 30 days.
