What would be the best car for a new 16 year old driver who likes cars very much?

He knows all about cars, and I was thinking of getting him a used car as a present. My budget is around $13,000. I think that he would want a stick, possibly even all-wheel drive. The car can not be slow. Also, the car can not be too small (example: Miata or MR2 Spyder.) If the car has to be auto, it has to have tip-tronic or a gearbox in which you can somehow choose what gear you would like to be in. Thank you for the imput, it is helpful comming from a second source.

A model one, since I believe it’s wrong to allow someone that age to drive.

If you want a car that fast and he can but money into get a nice camaro
or if you really want him to like it get him a 3000GT VR4

you can get a nice awd (quattro) audi stick from 3k all the way up to your budget. I would recommend some thing popular so parts are available and cheap so you wont be too disappointed when he wrecks it. I know not everyone wrecks their cars but 1st time drivers that have a car bought for them just dont have the responsibility instilled into them as a driver that bought their own car. get a $2k cavalier and if he makes it to Graduation without destroying it, then get him a nice graduation present. Ps. I just bought a 94 audi 90 quattro for $3600. its fast as hell and very stable. I’ve seen them go for less. like $2500- $3000. no need to spend 13k on some thing that is going to be training wheels.

I have an 07 Ford Focus ZX3.. Mostly Mazda drive train and fun to drive. You should be able to find a new one with Ford rebates for around your 13K.. Also look at the sister car the Mazda 3, a better buy I think if you can match the price.. You also might look to see if there are any left over 06 Nissan Sentras out there. They drive great and again 13k would buy a loaded one… Sorry that Corollas and Civics cost $5000 more to buy….

16-year old who wants a car that’s not slow? Hmmmm. Teen-age drivers have accident rates that are about 10 times higher than drivers in their 50s. My suggestion is a used Volvo. You can probably find one with a gearbox of the sort you’re looking for, and Volvos are pretty good handling cars. Most importantly, they have a very good record for safety. Teenagers spend very little time thinking about their mortality; so you’ll have to do the thinking for them.

You need to make sure that if you want a manual gearbox, you don’t buy an american car for a start.
By getting something from Europe or Japan you will find a much better car.
The first car that comes to mind is a MINI Cooper S, it’s fast, generally quite desirable, small and more suitable for a young driver than some of the larger Japanese alternatives.
Consider that price though, it seems an awful lot to spend on a car for someone so young.
