Which new cars (automatic transmission) give the best gas mileage?

I will be starting a new job that requires a longer commute and am looking to get a new car with good gas mileage to replace my ‘99 Saturn wagon. All wheel drive and some luxury features would be nice, but ultimately the gas mileage will be critical. What are the best newer cars (under $40K) from a gas mileage standpoint?

   I just got a brand new Honda Fit, it get’s great mileage (28-35) and has a ton of room inside for hauling stuff if i need to, plus it was a good price too!

   Like the lady prior stated, the Civic is a great car. I wanted to save a little more money and purchased a Chevy Cobalt (since I’m old school and like to try to keep the money here in the states) I get a true 27 city and 33 highway. For the same features in a Honda it was $3500 more. It also has TONS of power……. 148hp
