This question has been bugging me for a while and hopefully I can get an answer to it. I’ve noticed that new cars are always named for the next year (i.e. 2009 Acura when the year is 2008), is there a reason for this or is it a sales gimmick?

Most of the manufacturers start the next years production in August. August of 2008 begins the model year for 2009. Don’t know the reason unless it’s to get the new models out there before Christmas.

We introduce the next model year typically in June to August. And sometimes when they do a body a change the vehicle will be introduced a year early. For example the 2007 Tahoe came out in January of 2006 and the 2009 Vibe hit the show floor in February of this year. It’s just to get a jump start on the new model year. It isn’t a sales gimmick. Plus more people buy cars in the warm summer months.
