Engines dont cost much at all depending on which one you want for your vehicle. Prices could range from $300 dollars to the thousands. Its usually the labor cost that puts the price way over the top. A new motor at a shop sunk into your vehicle could cost you thousands and well over the price of the car. So people generally just go buy a used or make a nice down payment on a new one. Every car today is designed to get 300,000 miles plus on it ... as long as its taken care of.
