Jo$eph this is a very good question. I guess people don't ever really think of doing that.
There's a lot of waste in this world, and you just hit upon one of them. It's why so many are in debt.
Guess it's easier to buy a new car then to put in a new engine.

Well, you see there are many parts of a car that get damaged and worn out. Not just the engine!

If all you had to do was replace your engine and the car would keep working, then we'd all have a lot more cash in out pocket!

Haha. I wish it were that easy...

By the time your vehicle would reach the 'tons of miles' range the price of the vehicle would be depleted according to the book value. Engines dont cost much at all depending on which one you want for your vehicle. Prices could range from $300 dollars to the thousands. Its usually the labor cost that puts the price way over the top. A new motor at a shop sunk into your vehicle could cost you thousands and well over the price of the car. So people generally just go buy a used or make a nice down payment on a new one. Is just sometimes more practical and somewhat easier.

i tried that before, spent $4000 on a new engine, only to find out other things were breaking down, due to age an miles,,,after tallying everything that would need to be replaced and the engine already purchased, came to almost $9000. new tires, alternator, starter, all the things it needs to run properly, so the new car, was a better trade off for me.considering even with a new engine, i only was able to get $2500 for the whole car.

if people did the regular routine maintenance on their vehicles then they wouldn't have to worry about none of it. including an engine. Every car today is designed to get 300,000 miles plus on it ... as long as its taken care of. So if it does happen to get up that high in miles then I think by time the engine did blow then it would be worthy of just buying a new vehicle.

Sometimes the rest of the cars also not in very good shape. If your engine dies after a ton of miles, how long do you think the rest of it will last ? , Transmission, shocks, struts, coolant system, etc... , You must have the rest of the cars checked out well and if it is ok, put a engine in it. If not sell it to someone for parts.

Because the engine isn't the only part that ages on a car. the body can rust, the brake pads wear out, the brake lines can become damaged. --- much more.

A car takes a beating out there on the roadways. By the time it has one big problem, other problems turn up regularly after that.

great question!

I suppose most people just want something new, or want something to run ASAP so they can get on with thier lives.

As long as the rest of the car is in good shape and you like it.... why not replace the engine

That's a really good question! I think because some people think it would be more expensive to buy a new engine than a new car. By the way people get bored of their cars and always want something new.
